James Mattson, a 79-year-old man from Wichita, Kansas, tragically died after his vehicle was involved in a serious collision with a Wichita Fire Department engine and a third vehicle at a city intersection. The incident, which was reported by KWCH/Gray News, occurred while the fire department's engine was responding to an emergency, traveling with its emergency lights and sirens fully activated. Mattson was later identified by Wichita police as the individual who succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital following the crash.

Police officials provided details regarding the sequence of events that unfolded during the collision. According to their statements, Wichita Fire Department Engine 20 was actively crossing an intersection. At this critical juncture, a black Honda CRV, which was being driven by Mattson, entered the very same intersection. This action led to an immediate and direct impact between the two vehicles. The force of this initial collision subsequently caused both the fire engine and Mattson's Honda CRV to then strike another vehicle, a black Dodge Ram, which was also present at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that, regrettably, Mattson was the only person who suffered fatal injuries as a result of the multi-vehicle accident. He was transported to a hospital in Wichita, where medical personnel worked to treat him; however, he ultimately died from the injuries sustained during the crash. Fortunately, no other individuals involved in the significant incident reported any physical harm. Specifically, the driver of the black Dodge Ram, which was impacted in the secondary stage of the collision, was reported to be uninjured. Furthermore, all four firefighters who were on board Wichita Fire Department Engine 20 at the time of the incident were also confirmed to have escaped without injury.

In the aftermath of the fatal crash, the Wichita Police Department has taken charge of the investigation. The WPD Critical Accident Team, a specialized unit, has been assigned to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the collision. This team will delve into all available evidence, including witness accounts and vehicle data, to piece together a comprehensive understanding of how Engine 20, Mattson's Honda CRV, and the black Dodge Ram interacted at the intersection. The objective of their investigation is to ascertain the precise factors that contributed to the fatal outcome and ensure a complete and accurate record of the incident.
