Cottonwood and Ariton, both undefeated in region play, are set to clash Friday night in Cottonwood, with kickoff at 7 p.m. at the Bear Den. This highly anticipated Class 2A showdown carries significant implications for the 2A-Region 2 championship, according to coaches from both sides.
Ariton head coach Steve Kilcrease called it "obviously a huge game" with the region championship on the line. He views Cottonwood as the "benchmark" of their region for the past three seasons and "the team to beat." Conversely, Cottonwood head coach Dustin Harrison acknowledged Ariton as a long-standing standard in the region, noting mutual respect between the coaching staffs. Harrison emphasized the importance of his team continuously improving.
On the field, the Cottonwood Bears enter the contest undefeated behind a dominant ground game. They average nearly 350 rushing yards per game and more than 420 total yards, showcasing a relentless offensive assault. Coach Harrison underscored the critical role of the offensive and defensive lines, stating they "have to play better than anybody else on the field" for Cottonwood to succeed. He stressed the need for "great technique, great form, and play low and come off the ball and be physical." Cottonwood senior lineman Nicholas Anderson expressed confidence in his team's defensive front, anticipating "a lot of sacks, a lot of good coverage."
Challenging Cottonwood's powerful front will be an Ariton defense that averages more than 90 tackles per game. The Purple Cats also bring a balanced offensive attack, led by senior quarterback Addison Senn. Senn enters averaging over 100 passing yards and 130 rushing yards per contest. Senn voiced his team's readiness for the game, saying, "we're going to be ready this year" and that they understand Cottonwood's game plans.
Ariton’s Kilcrease believes that close non-region matchups against Dale County and Blountstown have adequately prepared his team for Friday’s physical challenge. He specifically cited the "physicality and the speed of those two teams" as beneficial tests.
This rivalry has deep roots, with the two programs having faced off every season since 2010. Last season's game saw Cottonwood edge out Ariton by a single point, adding to the intensity of this year's matchup. With potential rain in the forecast for Friday night, both teams are preparing for what could evolve into a classic trench battle, further highlighting the importance of play at the line of scrimmage.
