Dothan and the wider Wiregrass region are bracing for significant impacts as Hurricane Isaias strengthens in the Gulf and approaches anticipated landfall Friday evening in the Western Florida Panhandle. Forecasts indicate that the most pronounced effects for local residents will occur during the Friday evening hours and overnight into Saturday morning.
These impacts are expected to include strong wind gusts reaching between 40 and 60 miles per hour, alongside substantial rainfall. The region could see between two and four inches of rain, with higher amounts up to seven inches possible in specific bands of precipitation. Residents in the Wiregrass should prepare for these conditions.
Throughout Friday, the Wiregrass area is expected to experience increasingly rainy and windy conditions. The primary period for severe weather is anticipated to be from 6 p.m. to midnight. Temperatures are forecast to reach a high near 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the day before dropping into the upper 60s. Winds from the East-Northeast are predicted to be consistently between 10 and 20 miles per hour, with gusts potentially reaching 20 to 30 miles per hour.
As Friday night progresses, Hurricane Isaias will continue to influence local weather patterns in the early hours before conditions begin to dry after midnight. Overnight lows are projected to be around 67 degrees Fahrenheit early on, with temperatures then rising into the 70s. Winds are expected to shift to the East-Southeast, intensifying to 25-35 miles per hour, with powerful gusts of 40-60 miles per hour possible across the Wiregrass.
For those planning to travel to the coast on Friday, a Hurricane Warning is in effect for coastal lakes and bays. Conditions are described as "Extremely Rough" on these coastal waterways. Offshore, seas are expected to be between 8 and 14 feet, accompanied by East-Southeast winds ranging from 25 to 45 knots.
Looking beyond the immediate impacts of Isaias, the weekend is expected to bring a gradual improvement in weather conditions across the Wiregrass. Saturday is forecast to be partly cloudy with a slight chance of rain, a 20% probability, with a low around 67 degrees and a high near 83 degrees. Sunday will see mostly sunny skies, with a low of 63 degrees and a high of 81 degrees, and only a 5% chance of rain.
The start of the new week also appears mostly sunny. Monday's forecast includes mostly sunny conditions, a low near 61 degrees, and a high around 87 degrees, with a 5% rain chance. Mid-week predictions indicate continued mostly sunny weather. Wednesday is expected to have a low near 64 degrees and a high near 88 degrees, with a 5% chance of rain. Similarly, Thursday is forecast to be mostly sunny, with a low of 64 degrees and a high of 87 degrees, also with a 5% chance of rain.
