Dothan and Wiregrass area livestock owners now have access to temporary shelters, with one facility located on East Cottonwood Road, as Alabama officials prepare for Tropical Storm Isaias. The storm is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall Friday evening, Oct. 9, along the Northern Gulf Coast, prompting the opening of these sheltering options for evacuated livestock.

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries confirmed it is coordinating with partners to provide these temporary sheltering facilities for animals being moved in response to the storm. For those in Dothan and surrounding areas, a temporary livestock shelter is available at 1701 E. Cottonwood Road, Dothan, AL 36301.

Livestock owners interested in using the Dothan facility are encouraged to contact Tony Ellison at (334) 793-4323, ext. 104. Calling ahead allows owners to confirm that the facility can accommodate their animals and to learn any site-specific requirements before traveling to the location. This local option provides crucial support for farmers and animal owners in Houston County facing potential impacts from the approaching storm.

Animals moving because of Tropical Storm Isaias will be exempt from requiring a certificate of veterinary inspection, according to the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries. It is important for owners to note that these temporary shelters are specifically equipped to take livestock and are not designed for pets or other companion animals, such as dogs or cats.

The use of these temporary shelters is free of charge for livestock owners. However, space at each facility is available on a first-come, first-served basis. This emphasizes the importance of contacting the chosen facility, like the one on East Cottonwood Road, in advance to ensure availability and proper preparation for arrival.

In addition to the Dothan location, other temporary livestock shelters have been opened across the state to assist with widespread evacuation needs. These include a facility located at 4100 U.S. Highway 231 South in Troy, AL 36081, and another at 2224 Alabama Highway 14 West in Autaugaville, AL 36003.

Officials with the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries also urged livestock owners to be prepared to care for their animals while away from their properties. To facilitate a smooth and safe process at the shelters, they recommended that owners bring a current list of all their animals. This list should include essential details such as feeding schedules, vaccination records, and any relevant test records. Proof of ownership is also vital for each animal being sheltered.

Additionally, owners should have temporary identification supplies readily available, such as plastic neckbands and permanent markers labeled clearly with the owner’s name, address, and telephone number. Proper handling equipment, including halters and appropriate tools specific to each kind of animal being sheltered, should also be brought. Finally, owners are advised to pack water, feed, and buckets, along with all necessary tools and supplies needed for sanitation to maintain the well-being of their animals throughout the sheltering period.
